The Trunk Sewer Connection

Halifax Water has recently completed the construction of a new sanitary trunk sewer along the north shore of Lake Banook. Installing the trunk sewer was necessary to connect the "missing link" in the previously constructed North Dartmouth Trunk Sewer (click here to view the existing and newly constructed pipe routes).
The entire trunk sewer was originally planned for construction in the 1960/70s, however, a significant gap remained between Lakemist Court and Brookdale Crescent. In order to accomodate the growing demand, a pumping station on Lakemist Court pumped wastewater via a forcemain along Micmac Boulevard to the existing trunk sewer.

The newly constructed trunk sewer, which is now fully operational, connects the two existing trunk sewers and eliminates the need for this pumping station. This new sewer will now drain areas of Port Wallace, Burnside, and Dartmouth Crossing. As such, the forcemain has been abandoned and the pumping station has been decommissioned and removed from the site.

Public Trail

HRM saw the trunk sewer project as an excellent opportunity to improve the Lake Banook trail system. Construction of a fully landscaped public trail and footbridge along the sewer route was part of this project.

Lake Banook Canoe Course

Lake Banook, a world-renowned sporting venue for kayaking and canoeing, underwent significant canoe course improvements during the construction of the trunk sewer and public trail. During construction, Lake Banook was lowered by approximately 2 metres (6.5 feet), providing an excellent opportunity to upgrade the canoe course's existing race infrastructure.
