Annapolis Valley Regional School
Board Sewage Treatment Systems

Project Description
Schools throughout Nova Scotia built during the 1960s and 1970s traditionally had small packaged sewage treatment plants to service the needs of the facility. The small plants were at the end of their useful services lives and, in many instances, could not meet the discharge levels of current regulations, making them candidates for replacement. The Annapolis Valley Regional School Board identified six schools in their region that required replacement systems. An evaluation of the type of replacement system was required for each site. Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour (NSDEL) specified strategies for system design based on discharge options and flows.

Services Provided
Terrain Group provided treatment option analysis, topographic surveying, and design and construction administration support for the replacement sewage treatment and disposal systems for the six schools. NSDEL regulations relating to discharge restrictions required that on-site solutions be applied where possible. Where on-site options were not possible, sewage treatment plant technology could be applied. The resulting designs included: Mound Type Contour Beds for Newport Station Elementary (900 igpd) and Windsor Forks Elementary (1,260 igpd); Sloping Sand Filter Disposal Bed for Dr. Arthur Hines Elementary (1,260 igpd); Six Cell Area Bed for West Kings Rural High (7,800 igpd); and Orenco Recirculating Sand Filter Systems for Gaspereau Elementary (1,800 igpd) and Hants West Rural High and Elementary Schools (12,500 igpd).
