Bedford Highway Trunk Sanitary Sewer

Project Description
Halifax's trunk tunnel sewer system ended at the intersection of Kearney Lake Road and Bedford Highway in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), Nova Scotia. Increasing development pressure and the construction of a new school provided the impetus to extend the trunk sewer almost 2 miles out the Bedford Highway. Various options including inverted siphon, sewage pumping stations and a shallow grade gravity sewer were investigated. A 21-inch diameter gravity pipe installed at 0.2% grade was selected as the best long-term alternative by the Municipality.

Services Provided
Terrain Group carried out master planning for the area to be serviced and, in conjunction with HRM engineering staff, determined design criteria for pipe sizing and minimum slope. Field survey of the route focused on features which would impact on construction. Cross culverts, retaining walls, guardrails, railway embankments, slopes, and utility poles were all clearly identified for both the designer and the contractor. The design went from a minimum cover of 30 inches to a maximum cover of over 20 feet - all within the travelled way of a major arterial highway.

Terrain Group provided contract administration, community liaison, and construction review services during the construction phase.
