Can-Euro Building Stormwater Management

Project Description
This project is located on Horizon Court, a private street in Dartmouth, and includes a high-rise development of 134 individual units. The development also includes underground parking and an adjacent parking area outside the building. Terrain Group was hired by a local consultant already working on the project to address issues relating to site servicing.

The nearby stormwater system is privately owned and maintained, and particular attention was required for the system to meet criteria set by the local authority, Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). HRM required that the stormwater discharge from the site be equal to that prior to site development. HRM also required detailed information relating to stormwater.

Based on our experience and knowledge in this field, Terrain identified that stormwater storage would be required to meet this criteria. Typical to these types of commercial developments, the usable area for infrastructure, such as stormwater detention ponds is extremely limited.

Services Provided
Using an innovative approach to stormwater management, Terrain proposed utilizing the catchbasins located in the outside parking area, in conjunction with calculated grading, as a means to limit the stormwater discharge. This storage was created with the use of inlet control devices on the catchbasin outlets to control the flow of stormwater offsite.

In addition, HRM indicated that these areas used for stormwater storage would be limited to a maximum depth for a specified period of time. Terrain, using advanced simulation software, determined the maximum depth and duration for the areas used for stormwater storage.
