Climate Change Adaptation for Urban Infrastructure

Project Description
Climate change is a growing concern to both our present and future generations and there is increasing awareness that we need to implement adaptation techniques to manage the on-set of climate change. Our infrastructure is part of the backbone to the sustainable survival of our communities and the failure of these systems can lead to significant impacts on our economy and society. Climate change has the potential to significantly impact our infrastructure and therefore it is important to look at adaptation techniques to reduce the vulnerability of infrastructure to these impacts.

Services Provided
Terrain Group undertook a study that focused on the City of Fredericton’s urban infrastructure to identify the potential impacts of climate change and possible adaptation techniques that could be adopted. The study also undertook an extensive review of existing legislation and policies to identify if existing decision-making structures incorporated climate change. This was followed by recommendations on possible changes to better integrate climate change adaptation approaches into the decision-making processes. The study was prepared for the Atlantic Planners Institute with funding provided in partnership by the Terrain Group and Natural Resources Canada.
