Cole Harbour Storm Drainage Study

Project Description
On July 9, 1995, the Cole Harbour area in Nova Scotia experienced problems following a significant rainstorm. Approximately 70 millimetres of rain fell during a six hour period - the equivalent of a 1 in 40 year storm. In response to significant and wide-ranging reports of basement flooding, Halifax County Municipality, in conjunction with the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Communications, undertook a study to examine flooding problems and identify remediation options to address the reported basement flooding.

Services Provided
Terrain Group was selected in 1996 to carry out a Storm Drainage Study for the Cole Harbour area. Terrain Group's work involved homeowner interviews, analysis of file information, site visits including some undertaken during storm events, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, problem identification, review of general remediation options, identification of recommended remediation options complete with cost estimates and documentation of rationale, and the establishment of an implementation schedule.

Terrain Group was also retained to provide detail design and construction review services for several of the remediation projects. One remediation project involved the installation of a 72-inch diameter culvert designed to carry the 1 in 100 year storm in a brook passing under a roadway and between several dwellings.of general remediation options, identification of recommended remediation options complete with cost estimates and documentation of rationale, and the establishment of an implementation schedule.
