Infrastructure Mapping Projects

Project Description
In 1999, Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) and Halifax Regional Water Commission (HRWC) commenced an infrastructure mapping program. The project objective was to locate and identify all municipal utility features. The final goal was to improve the municipal Geographic Information System (GIS) and enable enhanced management of our clients’ assets.

Terrain Group has since completed major data collection projects in Sackville and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia for this client.

Services Provided
The projects called for the field survey of 13,000 utility features located over approximately 50 square kilometres. Real-time kinematic (RTK) Global Positioning System (GPS) technology provided the optimal solution to the demanding project specification: 15 cm accuracy.

Our project manager met with HRM and HRWC staff to review the required feature coding. Project specific data dictionaries were uploaded to our GPS data collection units, enabling rapid, error free coding of utilities. All hydrants, valves, manholes, and catchbasins within the project limits were coded and located.

Traffic control and safety are important considerations while undertaking urban data collection projects. Terrain technicians are certified in Traffic Control and have significant expertise in the utilization of GPS technology in an urban environment.
