Moncton North End Flooding Study
Project Description
On June 18, 1998, several subdivisions in Moncton North End experienced a significant rainstorm event and extensive flooding occurred. The City of Moncton retained Terrain Group to carry out a study that would identify the necessary remediation works required to accommodate a 1-in-5-year storm event within the pipe system in the drainage basin. The City of Moncton used the study as the first step towards creating a citywide stormwater management plan. All properties investigated under this study are serviced through a central sanitary sewer and municipal water supply, and a predominantly piped storm sewer system. The watershed area examined is approximately 147 hectares (360 acres) in size.
Services Provided
The methodology employed in analyzing the existing storm drainage system included a review of available documents, homeowner interviews, site inspections, and field measurements. In addition, stormwater modelling was carried out to aid in the analysis. The stormwater models were validated by rainfall and pipe flow measurement and are available for use by the City of Moncton to enable evaluation of the impact of future development in the watershed. A variety of remediation options to address the flooding concerns were considered and a recommended remediation program was identified.
