Springfield Lake Estates
Project Description
Springfield Lake Estates is a subdivision of 77 lots developed on a peninsula of land that extends into Springfield Lake. Previous development surrounds the lake making this the last available land with water frontage. The area is characterized by high groundwater and the presence of acidic slate. Halifax Regional Municipality operates a sewage treatment plant to the east of the development and a sewage collection system of individual grinder pumps adjacent to the project.
Services Provided
Terrain Group provided topographic surveying, service design including roads and lot layout, stormwater and sanitary sewer. Use of progressive cavity individual grinder sanitary sewer pumps were provided for the development. Terrain completed an extensive review of the sanitary pumping system. Given the localized high water table and slate rock in the area, individual grinder pumps and shallow forcemains were preferred over a large municipally-operated pumping station and deep gravity lines.
Comparative review of progressive cavity pumps and centrifugal pumps was necessary. The progressive cavity grinder pump was proposed since the nearly vertical pump curve allows for wastewater delivery under a variety of conditions. The design allows for accuracy in a system where the number of simultaneous pumps running is unpredictable and random. Pipe sizes were designed to provide proper scouring velocities.
Terrain provided construction review and certification to the municipality for the project.
