Atlantic Superstore at the pumps

Loblaw Properties Limited is expanding their ‘at the pumps’ line of gasoline sales into the Maritime provinces. The gas bars, which are being added to the parking lots of several Atlantic Superstores, generally consist of a small kiosk building and a number of pump islands. The ‘at the pumps’ gas bars have been operating in other provinces for several years and it was expected that the standard model would be acceptable in the Maritimes.

Services Provided
Terrain Group has full responsibility for the site plans and approvals for all of the Loblaw gas bars in the Maritimes. Three of the Terrain disciplines are directly involved with the gas bar projects. Terrain planning leads the projects and is the main client contact. The planning department is responsible for development of a site plan that is acceptable to the client and meets all of the relevant provincial and municipal regulations. The planning department then takes the project through the various approval agency processes, which is lengthy and time-consuming. Through this project, we have been able to develop contacts at all of the approval agencies, allowing us to shorten the time for obtaining approval to open to as little as one day after completion of construction. All of the Loblaw gas bars to date have been licensed to open within two days of completion.

Terrain’s engineering department provides detailed design services for the gas bar projects. This work includes site servicing, grading, stormwater management and erosion and sedimentation controls. Terrain’s drawings serve as a base for the other disciplines (electrical, mechanical, architectural, and landscaping) to work from. Terrain’s surveying department provides topographical and boundary surveys prior to initiation of the detailed design work, providing an accurate picture of the current conditions at the site. The survey department also provides the site contractor with layout information during construction.

To date, Loblaw gas bar projects have been successfully completed and opened across Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Future gas bar projects are underway for new locations around the Maritimes.
