Timberlea West Collector

Project Description
Master planning for the Beechville/Lakeside/Timberlea community in Nova Scotia identified the need for a limited access road to link Highway No. 3 to Highway 103. The creation of the Highway 103 interchange to serve the Otter Lake solid waste facility provided the necessary access to the 100 series highway. A route was selected from the new interchange to Highway No. 3 across a large parcel of land proposed for residential development. The design was to include an initial two lanes with ultimate buildout to four lanes with a median.

Services Provided
Terrain Group provided the site mapping, surveying, and detail engineering design for a four lane divided collector road. Terrain Group coordinated a geotechnical investigation which uncovered an old dump site containing asbestos material and various levels of contaminated soil. Cleanup of the dump site was included in the construction documents. A legal plan for the acquisition of the right-of-way was also prepared for the client. An earlier traffic study, which identified the need for the collector, indicated that only two lanes would be required until development in the community reached a certain level projected to be ten years away. Therefore, the design was carried out to allow for construction of only two lanes initially with open ditches. The ultimate design included four lanes with a median, concrete curbs, and a piped storm drainage system.

The project included conducting public presentations and presentations to Community Council on the proposed route and design.ing transportation system was upgraded to include two left turn lanes for access to the development.
