UNB Sustainable Design Guidelines, Fredericton, NB

Project Description
Terrain worked with the University of New Brunswick to develop guidelines to direct sustainable development of a portion of their forestry lands. Through consultation with various stakeholders, we compiled a list of sustainable development issues, which have been used as the foundation for the synthesis of sustainable development guidelines. The guidelines will provide guidance and direction for the environmentally, economically, socially and politically sustainable long-term development of the proposed development lands.

Services Provided
A sustainable development must address several key elements to achieve a design that respects and integrates the environment, economy, and community. True environmental sustainability is about flows of energy and resources. A truly sustainable system is a system that neither creates nor destroys resources but cycles materials through a system.

Terrain’s staff used their expertise in public consultation, and conducting a series of stakeholder consultations utilizing a variety of techniques such as meetings, design charettes and questionnaires to provide multiple opportunities for all parties to provide effective and meaningful input into the discussion. The guidelines were developed using the expertise of participants and Terrain’s knowledge of the regulatory planning processes, site design, commercial and residential development and sustainable development issues.
